The inauguration of Benjamin Uwajumogu into the Nigerian Senate on Friday, July 26, 2019 has left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a commanding lead in the upper legislative chamber.

Even though other lawmakers were officially inaugurated into the chamber on June 11, APC’s Uwajumogu had to wait for nearly two months as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it was investigating allegations of irregularities regarding his victory.

He was eventually awarded his certificate of return on Thursday, July 25 following a favourable ruling from an Abuja Federal High Court.

The upper legislative chamber has a total of 109 seats with 3 Senators from each of the 36 states plus one from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

With all 109 seats in the chamber now occupied, APC has won 64 seats while the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won 44 seats.

The Young Progressive Party (YPP) is the only other party outside of the two dominant ones inaugurated to the 9th Senate with only one seat.
